Musings of a dad

OK, so I've commandeered my wife's blog, and am making my first (maybe only?) entry since I don't have my own blog account.

This morning I had one of those experiences that seems to come most commonly for me early in the morning. I was sitting at my desk at home, and looked over and saw a toy on the ground next to the loveseat. My first inclination was to reach over and pick it up and remove it from my office. You see, I have a thing about "clutter"; I seem to be able to think better when there is no clutter and no distractions.

The toy was a little whale, and somehow this morning that little whale represented something about my two little boys; and as that impression came to me, I no longer wanted to move it. In fact, I almost simultaneously had two quotes come to my recollection (even though I hadn't thought of either of them for a long time).

The first was from President Thomas S. Monson in his October 2008 General Conference address entitled, Finding Joy in the Journey. He says:

"If you are still in the process of raising children, be aware that the tiny fingerprints that show up on almost every newly cleaned surface, the toys scattered about the house, the piles and piles of laundry to be tackled will disappear all too soon and that you will—to your surprise—miss them profoundly."

The second was quoted by Elder M. Russell Ballard in his April 2008 General Conference address, Daughters of God:

Author Anna Quindlen reminds us not to rush past the fleeting moments. She said: “The biggest mistake I made [as a parent] is the one that most of us make. . . . I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of [my three children] sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages six, four, and one. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less”(Loud and Clear [2004], 10–11).

Having had three children already grow up and leave the home, and a fourth getting close to that point, I have already experienced what it feels to "miss them profoundly." Wow, life just seems to have a way of tricking you into thinking that everything takes such a long time; but then when you get down that road and look back -- it suddenly seems like it all happened so fast!

I can't possibly express how much I love our oldest four children. Oh, how each and every one of them has brought such great joy to my soul. We have had fun, we have laughed, sometimes cried, kept trying when we have failed, and have always been friends. And as for our two sons that married our daughters -- wow, how lucky we are! They are both such great men.

Had it not been for my dear and wonderful wife, Belinda, we would have stopped after four children. Well, we also had help from the endless prayers of our son Benson (who had greater faith than any of us).

When I think back on the sacrifice and suffering that Belinda endured to bring each of these children into our family, I am amazed…. She entered into almost all of them (except the first I guess) knowing it would be very hard. She had such courage and faith and vision. To me, she is truly an Elect Lady. I am so thankful … and so lucky!

And what of those last two? They have been so fun! They have brought such joy. I love them like unto the others. They have extended the season of life wherein we can have so many wonderful experiences as parents with young children -- during those truly magical years. Yes, I will be an old man when our 6 year old is finally grown up and on his mission. But until then, we really are having a whale of a time!

Alvin is here

Our 5th grand baby was born today. I got a call at 5:12 am letting me know they were heading to the hospital. They arrived at the hospital at about 6:00 am and

Alvin Randall Henderson was born at 10:41 am, he weighed 8 lbs. 4 oz. 19.5 inches long and is as cute as he can be

What a glorious experience it is to watch your daughter give birth. I have been fortunate to have been invited to all 5 of my grandbabies births. I realize my daughter-in-laws may not invite me but that's okay. I'll just take what I can get and enjoy every little moment. He has a really cool birthday 4/11/11. His great- grandpa Les' birthday is the 10th (on Randy's side) and his great-grandpa Craft's (on Brittney's side) birthday is the 12th. We thought they might me figthing (or discussing in heaven) over who's birthday little Alvin would be born on. Alvin decided to make it fair and decided to be born smack dab in the middle of both of their birthdays to make both of them happy. Mother and baby are doing fine. What an exciting day.

All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience

Here’s what’s been happening in my life for the past 3 months:

My father-in-law came to live with us the last few months of his life, while he was dying of pancreatic cancer. Before cancer he weighed 212 lbs. He got down to under 100 lbs. before he died. He was in our home exactly 2 months. It was so hard watching someone die. What a growing experience it was while our house conformed to the new circumstances of having to keep our house quiet from the pitter patter of little feet, fixing dinner for countless visitors coming to see Grandpa, and caring for the needs of a dying person. However, there were tender moments with great-grandchildren, healing times with relationships, and opportunities to grow stronger as a family as we said our final good-byes.

A little ray of sunshine happened at the end of January as I witnessed the birth of our 4th grandchild into the world- Oliver James Liddle. What an incredible experience to watch your daughter give birth. We felt close to heaven on both ends – the leaving and entering of that heavenly realm.

Papa'sFuneral013 (Medium)Papa'sFuneral122 (Medium)The day after the funeral I got really sick and was flat in bed for 6 days with influenza B and a sinus infection and not feeling good for about a month. I don’t remember ever being that sick. During this whole time we had smaller trials like our goat Bella who got stepped on by our horse and broke her leg. Clara who got de-horned, our new freezer that broke for the second time in 3 months, a water leak in a pipe in our wall (the paint on our wall is bubbling and sheet rock is soft). Oh yeah, our house was also invaded by little critters. One night Benson set 3 traps, full in the morning. The next night he set 6 traps, full in the morning. The next night he set 10, needless to say, I didn't sleep that night. Thankfully we only caught one. We put moth balls in the holes to try to stink them out (my father-in-laws idea), we also enjoyed the smell permeating our lovely home. What fun.4-3-11027 (Medium)To top it all off my granddaughter, Katie Marie, was life-flighted to Primary Children’s Hospital because an armoire fell on her. My 9 month pregnant daughter had to lift it off her ( 200+ lbs.) She found her totally unconscious with blood coming out her ears, nose and later vomiting blood. She ended up with 2 hairline fractures on both sides of her head but miraculously is doing great. The power of priesthood is real, fasting and prayers work we have seen a miracle in her behalf.3-27-11_0037 (Medium)We still have 1 more grand baby to look forward to any day now.Diptych-3And this handsome face in just 5 weeks. Yippee!!! So many talks during Conference were spoken just for me. I am grateful for the trials that make me a better person and all these things that give me experience and will be for my good. I have so much to be grateful for.5-16-09 032 (Medium)It’s definitely not boring at our house.
