Almost 50

Well the time has finally arrived.  I am married to a man that is in his 50th year.  Stan turned 49 on September 12th.  Next year he will have been married half his life.  WOW!!!  We of course had the traditional Craft Family birthday dinner - ham hock & beans & cornbread.  Well this is how it works - you break open the corn bread on your plate, then you put the beans on top of the cornbread, then you put sweet pickle relish and ketchup  to top it all off.  Few members of the younger Crafts have grown a taste for it yet.  I do have to admit that just this year I started doing it the "real" way.  I used to put salsa on it to cover up the real flavor.  This tradition started 2 generations ago with Grandma & Grandpa Bassett.  Grandma always felt embarrassed when someone asked her what she made for the birthday dinner.  She didn't like telling people all she made was ham hock & beans.  So one year she broke the tradition and made a roast.  Boy did she get flack from the family for that one, so she went back to the old southern ham hock & beans & cornbread dinner.
If any of you would like the recipe I have it memorized.  I have been a part of making it every birthday since I was inducted into the Craft family.  It kind of grows on you.  I also have a great recipe for the famous waffles & gravy breakfast.  Now this one I love.  I just don't prefer the ketchup they put on it.  It kind of destroys the flavor.

I sure am  a lucky girl to have married such a wonderful guy.  Old or not I love him.

I will be getting both of those recipes for sure! I love ham hock and beans. My Grandma used to make it all the time. I like the idea of putting it over cornbread with all the toppings. YUM!
